Test Details: BRCA1 and BRCA2 are genes that protect cells by making proteins that help prevent tumors from forming. This test detects mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes which are the most common causes of breast and ovarian cancers. Somatic variant testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants should be performed in women who do not carry a germline pathogenic or likely pathogenic BRCA1/2 variant (which are tumor suppressor genes located on chromosome 17 and 13 respectively). This test detects single-nucleotide variants, deletions and insertions in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. This test consists of sequencing and large rearrangement analyses of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes using next-generation sequencing (NGS).
