Test Details: Hepatitis C testing is done to determine if a person has been infected by the Hepatitis C virus. Antibodies are a part of the body's response to an infection. Testing for hepatitis C antibodies determines whether or not a patient has been exposed to the hepatitis C virus at some point in their life. If the test is positive, the next step is to test for hepatitis C RNA which can tell if the person is having a current infection. Risk factors for HCV include injectable drug use, blood transfusion history, receiving kidney dialysis, working or living in a prison, being born to a mother with hepatitis C, having an HIV infection, unprotected sex. Symptoms may include dark yellow urine, fatigue, fever, clay colored stool, pain in abdomen or joints, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite and jaundice.
