Apolipoprotein – E
Test Details: The Apolipoprotein (Apo) E is one of the five main types of blood lipoprotein (A-E) and is produced by APOE gene. Apo E is made in the liver and brain and helps in the transportation of dietary lipids (fats). APOE gene exists in three different forms (alleles) - e2,e3 and e4; where e4 genotype is a genetic risk factor for dementia, Alzheimer's disease (AD) and cardiovascular disease. The two methods to determine ApoE type are i. Genotyping and ii. Electrophoresis. Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) displays a unique distribution of electrophoretic isoforms in the presence of AD and thus differentially charged isoforms of ApoE from human blood may be used to distinguish AD patients from non-AD subjects.
