Herpes Simplex Virus (Type 1 )
Test Details: There are 2 types of HSV: HSV-1 and HSV-2. HSV-1 generally causes oral herpes. Oral herpes causes blisters called cold sores. DNA testing may be useful in diagnosis of infection in neonates. Neonates who have been exposed to HSV can develop disseminated infection and encephalitis. Encephalitis is usually due to HSV-1. DNA testing provides reliable means to define the type.
